The Week

Art Basel Miami Beach is the most important contemporary art fair in the western hemisphere. For one week in December, the city stops being Miami and becomes something else entirely. 280 galleries from forty countries. Parties that run until the sun comes up over the Atlantic.

Wednesday and Thursday. Acquisition Happens Before the Public Arrives.

Wednesday and Thursday. Acquisition Happens Before the Public Arrives.

The best works at Art Basel Miami Beach sell in the first hours of the VIP preview on Wednesday morning. By Thursday afternoon the galleries are replenishing their walls with secondary works. The collectors who come to acquire come on Wednesday. General admission opens Friday and runs through Sunday. For anyone with acquisition intent, a VIP card, secured through a gallery relationship or through the fair directly by demonstrating collecting history, is not optional. The Galleries sector occupies the main hall and represents the commercial core of the fair. The Meridians sector presents large-scale works and installations that cannot be housed in conventional booth configurations. The Nova, Positions, and Survey sectors are where the more interesting curatorial decisions tend to be made: emerging artists, mid-career retrospective moments, and historical rediscoveries. The Kabinett format presents curated solo presentations within gallery booths. Walk the Meridians first, before the main hall fills.

Faena or the Surf Club. Decide Who You Are.

Ch. 02The Stay

Faena or the Surf Club. Decide Who You Are.

The Faena Hotel Miami Beach at 3201 Collins Avenue is the correct choice for those who want to be inside the Art Basel week at full intensity. Designed by Alan Faena in collaboration with Baz Luhrmann, it operates during Art Week as the most concentrated social environment in the city: Damien Hirst's gilded mammoth skeleton on the grounds, Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann at dinner, a crowd dressed as though arriving directly from a gallery opening, and spontaneous events that begin in the bar and rarely end before two in the morning. For a different version of the week, the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Surfside, at 9011 Collins Avenue, is the counter-argument: originally opened in 1930 and hosting Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor through its first iteration, reopened with a Richard Meier addition and interiors by Joseph Dirand, with Thomas Keller's Michelin-starred restaurant on site. The Surf Club is for those who want Art Basel week at a considered remove, with the option to engage on their own terms. Both require reservations made in September at the latest.

Wynwood and the Design District. The Week Around the Week.

Ch. 03The Satellite Fairs

Wynwood and the Design District. The Week Around the Week.

The satellite fairs that run alongside Art Basel Miami Beach are in several cases more interesting than the main event, and considerably easier to navigate. Untitled Art Fair operates directly on the sand at Ocean Drive and 12th Street, presenting work in a tent format that combines ocean air with serious curatorial programming. Design Miami sits immediately adjacent to the Convention Center presenting collectible design objects from the same galleries that show furniture and objects at Design Miami Basel in June. The Rubell Museum in Allapattah, the private collection of Don and Mera Rubell spanning over a thousand works by more than two hundred artists, mounts major exhibition programming for Art Week each year and is among the most important private museum collections accessible to the public in the United States. Wynwood Walls, the curated outdoor mural space that Tony Goldman established in 2009, has the best sustained density of public art in the city and takes an afternoon to cover properly. The Institute of Contemporary Art in the Design District offers free admission and consistently mounts significant programming.

Casa Tua. Stubborn Seed. The Table That Takes Planning.

Ch. 04The Dinners

Casa Tua. Stubborn Seed. The Table That Takes Planning.

Casa Tua on James Avenue in South Beach is the dinner that the serious Art Basel crowd has been eating at for two decades. The restaurant is inside a 1925 Mediterranean-style villa with a garden terrace and a membership club upstairs, and its combination of Italian cooking, candlelit atmosphere, and proximity to everything on the Beach makes it the most consistently correct dinner of the week. Reserve three weeks in advance for Art Week. Stubborn Seed in the South of Fifth neighbourhood, Jeremy Ford's tasting menu restaurant and winner of Top Chef season thirteen, offers the most technically serious dinner in South Beach at a price point well below what the week's hotel rates might suggest. The Surf Club Restaurant, operated by Thomas Keller and drawing from his Bouchon philosophy of classical French technique applied to a coastal American menu, is the correct dinner for those staying in Surfside. Zuma Miami in the Epic Hotel on the Miami River is the late dinner that becomes the early party: the Japanese robata grill format accommodates large tables and the bar fills well after midnight.

The Fontainebleau to EllEVEN. Miami After-Hours.

Ch. 05The Parties

The Fontainebleau to EllEVEN. Miami After-Hours.

The Art Basel Miami Beach party calendar operates on a clear hierarchy. Monday and Tuesday evenings, before the fair opens, are for gallery dinners: Gagosian at Mr. Chow, Hauser and Wirth at their own venue, David Zwirner hosting privately, Pace and White Cube running events for their collectors. These require gallery relationships and are the most genuinely interesting social events of the week because the guest lists are constructed by the gallerists themselves and the conversations are, at least on Monday, still about the work. From Wednesday onwards the social calendar broadens. The Faena Forum on Collins Avenue hosts the most architecturally serious event space in Miami Beach, a circular structure designed by Bjarke Ingels, and during Art Week it runs major brand events and private dinners that require invitation or a very well-connected concierge. LIV at the Fontainebleau Hotel on Friday and Saturday nights is the correct large venue: table bookings require advance reservation and a minimum spend that reflects the week's economics. EllEVEN in downtown Miami operates twenty-four hours and is where the circuit ends up after everything else closes.

The Causeways Lock. Arrive by Water or by Car.

Ch. 06The Transport

The Causeways Lock. Arrive by Water or by Car.

The MacArthur, Julia Tuttle, and Venetian Causeways connecting Miami Beach to the mainland become effectively non-functional between six and nine in the evening during Art Week. Ride-share surge pricing during peak hours is extreme. The correct transport strategy for Art Basel week is a private car on daily contract, engaged for the full week rather than called per journey, giving freedom to move between the Convention Center, Wynwood, the Design District, and dinner without any dependence on app availability. For movement between hotels on the Beach and the satellite fairs in Wynwood and Allapattah, a pre-arranged driver who knows the week's rhythms is the difference between the week working and the week being defined by its logistics. Water taxis between the Venetian Islands and South Beach operate during Art Week and are underused. Fly into Miami International. Private aviation into Opa-locka Executive Airport north of the city reduces ground transfer time considerably.
